Joe Wilson was one of only seven members of the South Carolina Senate to vote to keep the Confederate battle flag flying over the state house in 2000.  Now he has one other grand accomplishment to add to his distinguished resume: Wilson shouted “you lie” during Obama’s speech to Congress.  Of course, that statement is a bit ambiguous in a room full of professional liars.

Saturday Night Live has apparently figured out why Wilson made his historic outburst:

President Barack Obama said what the country was thinking in an off-the-record comment that was caught on tape and posted around the Internet.

“The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person.  She’s getting her award.  What’s he doing up there?  He’s a jackass.”

When the crowd in the room erupted in laughter, Obama instantly realized his offhand remark would make news.  “C’mon guys,” Obama said, “Cut the president some slack.”

The online community of “birthers” is going crazy after discovering a Kenyan birth certificate for President Barack Obama.  Birthers believed this certificate proved that Obama was born in Kenya and not Hawaii, and therefore is not eligible to be President of the United States.

You can see the claim of authenticity here and some debunking here.  All this fuss in spite of right-wing FoxNews declaring that Obama’s Hawaiian birth certificate is legitimate. 

It appears that even Congress has accepted Obama’s American birthplace.  The U.S. House on Monday unanimously approved a resolution recognizing and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hawaii becoming the 50th state.  A clause was included that reads: “Whereas the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961.”

Hawaiian state law prohibits the release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who does not have a tangible interest.  However, Obama’s birth certificate along with birth notices from the two Honolulu newspapers were brought forward even before he took office.

Baby Barack’s birth was not heralded, as some of his partisans have suggested, by a star in the east, but it was heralded by the Honolulu Star, as well as the Honolulu Advertiser, each of which published birth announcements for young Mr. Obama.

Much foolishness has become attached to the question of President Obama’s place of birth, and a few misguided souls among the Right have indulged it. … Like Bruce Springsteen, he has a lot of bad political ideas; but he was born in the U.S.A.

Whatever your politics or religion, you have to admit it’s an upside-down world when Notre Dame awarded President Obama with an honorary degree, but Arizona State University did not.  "His body of work is yet to come.  That’s why we’re not recognizing him with a degree at the beginning of his presidency," ASU spokeswoman Sharon Keeler said.

Obama took the issue head-on in his commencement speech at ASU.  “I come here not to dispute the suggestion that I haven’t yet achieved enough in my life,” Obama joked Wednesday.  “First of all, Michelle (Obama) concurs with that assessment.  She has a long list of things that I have not yet done waiting for me when I get home.  But more than that I come to embrace the notion that I haven’t done enough in my life.  I heartily concur.  I come to affirm that one’s title, even a title like ‘president of the United States,’ says very little about how well one’s life has been led.”

C’mon, universities hand out honorary doctorates to just about anybody whose honoring will help fill the school coffers.  ASU not honoring the first black president of the United States is an example of smart people over-thinking and acting stupid.
